Why Companies Hire Virtual Assistants in the Philippines

English fluency, a deep talent pool, strong privacy law and real cost advantages: the evidence behind the Filipino virtual assistant boom, plus an honest look at where the model does not fit.

Key takeaways

  • The Philippines ranks 28th of 123 countries for adult English proficiency and scores highest in writing (603), the skill most virtual assistant work depends on.
  • The IT-BPM industry employs roughly 1.9 million people. By our calculation, that is about 1 in every 28 Filipino workers.
  • Our original time-zone analysis shows the Philippines beats India, Poland and Latin America on live overlap with Australia, but trails Latin America for the US.
  • Talent is national: strong English scores appear in Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, not only in Metro Manila or Cebu.
  • It is not the right fit for every role. Work that needs live US business-hours presence on a standard day is better served elsewhere.

Ask any founder who has hired a Filipino virtual assistant why they chose the Philippines and the usual answers are communication, reliability, time-zone flexibility and cost. Those answers are only useful if the data backs them up, so we checked each claim against published sources and ran our own numbers where the sources stopped. This guide covers what holds up, what does not, and how to decide. You can read more about Nomad VAs and who we are.

Why do companies hire virtual assistants in the Philippines?

Companies choose the Philippines because six measurable factors line up: English skills, an established outsourcing industry, a young workforce, literacy, privacy regulation and a lower wage base. No single factor decides it. The combination is what makes a Filipino virtual assistant a lower-risk offshore hire than most alternatives.

How good is English proficiency compared with other offshore hubs?

According to the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, the Philippines scores 569 and ranks 28th globally, in the High band. That is 81 points above the global average of 488. The same fact sheet shows the Philippines scoring 603 in writing, 573 in reading, 567 in listening and 539 in speaking.

Two honest readings follow. First, the Philippines is not the top scorer: Poland, Malaysia and Argentina rank higher. Second, the Philippines is far ahead of India and Colombia, and its strength in writing matters because most virtual assistant output is written: emails, tickets, documentation, captions and reports. Speaking is the weakest sub-score, so test it live. Our four-stage vetting framework includes a live interview for exactly this reason.

How big is the Philippine talent pool?

The Philippine IT and business process management (IT-BPM) sector ended 2025 with export revenue above $40 billion and about 1.9 million workers, according to the industry body IBPAP as reported by The Philippine Star. Headcount grew about 4% and revenue about 5%, ahead of roughly 3% global industry growth.

Two caveats keep the picture honest. IBPAP cut its 2028 forecasts after a roadmap review, now projecting 2.14 million jobs in the best case versus the 2.5 million it targeted in 2022, per GMA News. Growth is real but slowing. On the supply side, the PSA reported unemployment of 6.0% in July 2026, up from 4.9% in June, as people moved from school into the labor market, per GMA News. For employers, that means plenty of candidates, so the real work is selecting well.

Is the talent only in Manila?

No. In the 2023 EF edition, the Cordillera Administrative Region scored 616, Davao 606 and Eastern Visayas 596, according to The Philippine Star, which is higher than many readers expect from regional areas. Nomad VAs is based in Cebu City, and our roots are in the islands of Cebu, Palawan and Siargao. But we recruit nationwide. Our specialists work from Luzon, the Visayas, Mindanao and island provinces, which widens the pool and lets us match skills and schedules without being limited to one city. You can see the people behind the roles on our team page.

Does the Philippine time zone work for US, UK and Australian clients?

It depends on the client's location and on how you schedule the work. The Philippines runs on UTC+8 with no daylight saving. To quantify what that means, we ran an original analysis.

Original data

A client's 9 to 5, in Manila time (July)

Bars show the client's 9:00 to 17:00 day on a 24-hour Manila clock. Manila's own business day is 09:00 to 17:00.

New YorkManila 21:00 to 05:00
ChicagoManila 22:00 to 06:00
Los AngelesManila 00:00 to 08:00

Tap a region for the shift.

Figure 3: A client's 9:00 to 17:00 day in Manila time, July 2026.

Table 3: Original data: what a 9:00 to 17:00 client day equals in Manila time, and standard-day overlap with a Manila-based assistant

Client cityClient 9 to 5 in Manila time (July)Client 9 to 5 in Manila time (January)Standard-day overlap (July / January)
New York21:00 to 05:0022:00 to 06:000 / 0 hours
Chicago22:00 to 06:0023:00 to 07:000 / 0 hours
Los Angeles00:00 to 08:0001:00 to 09:000 / 0 hours
Toronto21:00 to 05:0022:00 to 06:000 / 0 hours
London16:00 to 00:0017:00 to 01:001 / 0 hours
Sydney07:00 to 15:0006:00 to 14:006 / 5 hours

Table 3 delivers the central finding: for Australian clients, a Philippine assistant on ordinary hours covers most of the client's working day. For US and UK clients, standard-day overlap is zero to one hour, so the arrangement relies on a shifted schedule (the assistant works your daytime from Manila's evening or night) or on an asynchronous model where finished work is waiting when you start. Nomad VAs schedules each specialist to your time zone, but you should decide up front which model you want.

Table 4: Original data: standard 9 to 5 overlap hours by offshore hub (July / January)

Client cityPhilippinesIndiaPolandArgentinaColombia
New York0 / 00 / 02 / 27 / 67 / 8
London1 / 03.5 / 2.57 / 74 / 52 / 3
Sydney6 / 53.5 / 2.50 / 00 / 00 / 0

Each hub's staff on their own local 9 to 5.

The result is useful because it is not flattering to one answer. Latin America wins on live overlap for US clients and Poland wins for the UK, while the Philippines wins for Australia and for work that does not need live overlap. Many SEO, content, research and admin tasks fall into that second group, which is why they are the most common offshore roles.

How much cheaper is a Philippine virtual assistant?

Cheaper in most cases, but the size of the saving depends on role, seniority and schedule. For a reference point, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median pay of $22.82 per hour for secretaries and administrative assistants in May 2024. In the Philippines, wage boards set minimums region by region, and Metro Manila's non-agricultural minimum rose to 755 pesos per day in July 2026 under Wage Order NCR-27, per The Philippine Star. Skilled specialists earn well above any legal floor, and statutory benefits add to employer cost. Treat the floor as context, not a price list. For real numbers by role, read our full guide to virtual assistant costs or check transparent pricing.

Which roles do companies hire in the Philippines?

Companies hire for any repeatable, remote knowledge work. Nomad VAs places nine role types, each with its own service page.

Is it safe to share data with a Philippine virtual assistant?

It can be, provided you add your own controls. The Philippines enacted the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act 10173), creating the National Privacy Commission to enforce it, as summarized by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. The law was influenced by EU data protection rules and the APEC framework, according to law firm coverage at Mondaq, and it includes breach notification and outsourcing provisions.

The law helps, but it does not replace your own policy. Whichever country your assistant works from, use least-privilege access, a password manager, a signed confidentiality agreement and an offboarding checklist. For regulated work such as patient records, apply the extra safeguards used for healthcare virtual assistants, described on the page linked in Table 5.

When is the Philippines not the right choice?

A fair guide names its limits. The Philippines is a weaker fit in four situations:

Fit check

Strong fit and weaker fit

Match your situation against both columns before you decide.

Strong fit
Writing-heavy work: email, documentation, support
A shifted or asynchronous schedule is acceptable
Australian clients, with near-full overlap
Specialist roles with an agency behind them
Weaker fit
You need live presence in standard US business hours
Phone-based work with strict accent or dialect expectations in your market
Work that needs a local license or legal standing
A team of one with no management layer

Tap a task to see who owns it.

Figure 4: When the Philippines is a strong fit and when it is not.

  • You need live presence in standard US business hours and cannot accept a shifted schedule. Latin America offers more natural overlap (Table 4).
  • The role is primarily phone-based with heavy accent or local-dialect expectations in your market. Test speaking carefully, since it is the lowest EF sub-score.
  • Your work requires a local license or legal standing, such as regulated financial advice. A VA can support, but not replace, a licensed professional.
  • You want a team of one with no management layer. A direct freelancer may be simpler. Our comparison of hiring models, direct hire, contract-to-hire and temporary staffing, explains the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Are Filipino virtual assistants fluent in English?

Generally yes. The EF English Proficiency Index 2025 scores the Philippines 569, which ranks 28th of 123 countries and sits in the High band, well above the global average of 488. Writing is the strongest skill (603), which suits email, documentation and support work. Always confirm with a written test and a live call, because individual skill varies. See our vetting framework for how to test it.

What time zones can a Philippine virtual assistant cover?

The Philippines is on UTC+8 all year with no daylight saving. On a standard 9 to 5 day it overlaps 5 to 6 hours with Sydney, about 1 hour with London in summer, and none with US cities. For US and UK clients, most teams use a shifted schedule or an overlap window. Nomad VAs matches schedules to your time zone, so book a discovery call to map the coverage you need.

Is a Filipino virtual assistant cheaper than a US hire?

Usually, yes, but the gap depends on the role and the schedule. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $22.82 per hour for secretaries and administrative assistants (May 2024), while the Metro Manila statutory minimum wage rose to 755 pesos per day in July 2026. Pay for skilled VAs sits well above the legal floor, so compare real quotes. Our cost guide and pricing page break it down.

Is it safe to give a Philippine virtual assistant access to customer data?

It can be, with the right controls. The Philippines has had a comprehensive privacy law, the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (RA 10173), enforced by the National Privacy Commission, which covers outsourcing and breach notification. You should still use least-privilege access, a signed confidentiality agreement and your own security policies. For regulated work such as patient data, see our healthcare VAs page.

What tasks can a Filipino virtual assistant handle?

Almost any repeatable, remote knowledge task: SEO, social media, customer support, real estate admin, content writing, paid ads, executive support, outreach and healthcare administration. Strategy and final judgment calls usually stay with you. Browse every role on our services page.

Why choose the Philippines over India or Latin America for a virtual assistant?

It depends on your priorities. The Philippines leads India and Colombia on measured English proficiency (569 versus 484 and 480 in the EF index) and has a mature outsourcing industry. Latin America offers more live overlap with US hours, and Poland with UK hours. If your work is writing-heavy and can run on a shifted or asynchronous schedule, the Philippines is a strong fit.
